ඇමරිකාවේ නිව්යෝක්හිදී සාහසිකයෙකු අතින් තියුණු ආයුධ ප්‍රහාරයකට ලක්වූ ප්‍රකට ගත් ගතුවරයෙකු වන සල්මන් රුෂ්ඩිගේ එක් ඇසක පෙනීම අහිමි වී තිබෙනවා. ප්‍රහාරය හේතුවෙන් ඔහුගේ එක් අතක්ද අප්‍රාණික වී ඇති බව විදෙස් මාධ්‍ය වාර්තා කළා. උත්සවයක් අමතමින් සිටියදී පසුගිය අගෝස්තු මාසයේදී සල්මන් රුෂ්ඩිට මෙලෙස ප්‍රහාරයක් එල්ල කරනු ලැබුවේ 24 හැවිරිදි මාතාර් නම් පුද්ගලයෙකු විසින්. ප්‍රහාරය හේතුවෙන් තවදුරටත් ඔහුගේ පපුවේ තුවාල 15ක් පමණ පවතින බව ද සඳහන්. 75 හැවිරිදි වියේ පසුවන සල්මන් රුෂ්ඩි රචනා කළ ද සාතනික් වර්සස් නම් කෘතිය හේතුවෙන් ඉස්ලාම් සටන්කාමීන්ගෙන් ඔහුට නිරන්තරයෙන් ජීවිත තර්ජන එල්ල වෙමින් තිබුණා. සල්මන් රුෂ්ඩි අවස්ථා කිහිපයකදීම බුකර් සම්මානය සඳහා නිර්දේශ වී තිබෙන අතර, 1981 වසරේ දී ඔහු විසින් රචනා කළ ‘මිඩ්නයිට් චිල්ඩ්‍රන්ස්’ නම් කෘතියට බුකර් සම්මානය දිනාගත්තා.
